AI does not affect everyone equally. Biased data and design can reproduce existing discrimination in new systems. Protecting human rights starts with understanding who is affected, and how.
Two new United Nations Human Rights Council resolutions highlight the importance of scientific evidence and inclusive dialogue in AI governance.
???? AI and human rights (63/15): The Independent International Scientific Panel on AI’s Preliminary Report and the first Global Dialogue on AI Governance feature in the resolution, reinforcing the importance of human rights in AI governance.
???? Women and girls in digital technologies (63/13): Highlights the Panel’s relevance in understanding AI’s different impacts on women and girls, including discriminatory bias, and the importance of their meaningful participation in AI governance.
Together, the resolutions connect independent science and inclusive dialogue to UN human rights work, in line with Objective 3 of the Global Digital Compact: an inclusive, open, safe and secure digital space that respects, protects and promotes human rights.
