CM directs finalisation of legal framework for jail reforms

PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Mahmood Khan here on Wednesday directed the home and prison departments to finalise work on new legal framework for better and efficient management of the prisons and introducing jail reforms across the province.

Chairing a meeting of directorate of prison, he directed the officials to expedite work on construction of divisional level jails in Malakand and Kohat, said a statement.

The chief minister also said that home work should also be carried out for the approval of schemes regarding construction of district jails in all those districts including the newly merged areas that were without prisons.

Agreeing in principle with the proposal of creating new positions of deputy inspector general prisons at all divisional level and reservation of 10 per cent quota for the scions of jail employees of the total strength of vacancies in the department, Mr Khan also directed the relevant officials to initiate process in that regard.

The meeting was briefed in detail about the overall performance of prison department, progress made so far on prison reforms, implementation status of developmental projects, issues faced by the department and other related matters.

The meeting was informed that record of 14 jails in the province including complete details of prisoners was computerised whereas computerisation of the rest of jails was in progress.

The meeting was informed that the first phase of the project of expansion in Peshawar Central Jail was completed as a result a total capacity of 2,365 prisoners was increased in the jail.

The meeting was informed that healthcare facilities were provided to 27,220 prisoners during the current year whereas screening of 19,788 prisoners was carried out for various viral diseases.

The meeting was informed that 6,465 books were provided to the libraries established in prisons across the province. It was said that open air fitness gym was set up in Peshawar Center Jail whereas construction of badminton court in Mardan jail was in progress.
